Dax 10 minutes drive.

Dax is a commune of Aquitaine in southwestern France, sous-préfecture of the Landes département. It is particularly famous as a spa, specialising in mud treatment for rheumatism and similar aliments.

It was first established by the Romans, and

its reputation is supposed to date from a visit by Julia, the daughter of the first Emperor Octavian Augustus.  (source: Wikipedia)

Famed for its natural hot water of 62.4 degrees centigrade, and healing mud from the River Adour. The Roman baths are a focal point of the town. There are several hot water outlets around the town, where you can take a mud bath, or just bathe in the waters. It is also a market town, former bishopric and busy local centre, especially for the Chalosse area.

Atlantic beaches From 20 minutes to 1 hour drive.

The Aquitaine coastline is one long beach of fine sans and rocky coves. 250 km in a single stretch. Wouldn't want to walk that in a hurry. You can distinguish four types of coastline in Aquitaine – four geographical areas, four kinds of landscape, four different atmospheres … Running from north to south, they are the Médoc, the

Bay of Arcachon, the Landes and the Basque Coast.

“The Côte d’Argent symbolises this whole coastal area, lined with sparkling ocean spray”, wrote Maurice Martin, the inventor of the term Côte d’Argent (Silver Coast) in 1905. The expression “Aquitaine Coast” officially appeared in 1967 with the creation of the MIACA (a French inter-ministerial committee to develop the Aquitaine coast), which was largely responsible for protecting the Aquitaine coastline.

Biarritz From 30 minutes drive.

Formerly a small whale fishing port, and favourite resort of Emperor Napoleon III. Has a beautiful rocky coastine with sandy beaches. Biarritz is today Europe's surf capital.

Biarritz is a large town with several quartiers and is one of the principal resorts

on the Côte Basque, and probably the most famous part of the Pays Basque. Biarritz came to fame in the mid 19th Century, when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) fell in love with this part of the Basque country and built a Palace on the beach at Biarritz (which is now the world class Hotel du Palais) and a centre with natural springs at Eugenie les Bains in the Landes. Eugenie invited foreign royalty to stay with their entourages and courtiers; Queen Victoria of Britain, who came regularly over a period of 30 years, and sundry Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, German, Russian nobility. The Russians built their own magnificent Orthodox Church next to the Palace.
The principle architecture in Biarritz was not typically Basque, but rather a blend of 19th century city residences, large and expansive, made of local stone bricks. If you bought one of these houses now, you would probably find titles such as the Prince, Duke, Baron, Marquee etc. on the title deeds.

Biarritz has a lot more than beautiful buildings to offer today. It's a vibrant cosmopolitan town with magnificent beaches, golf courses and numerous sporting facilities, not forgetting the surf. Surfing started in France here in Biarritz and surfers come from all over the world to ride the waves. The Biarritz Surf Festival brings together surfers from Hawaii, California and Australia every year to celebrate the birth of surfing in Biarritz. (source: Touradour)
